Issues discussed at GI forum

The capital hosted the 2018 China Geographical Indication Protection and Development Forum on July 11, with participants discussing how to foster featured industries and help poverty alleviation by strengthening GI development. The GI system was also discussed at the forum, and the ways it can be used to help build a more beautiful countryside. The event attracted more than 200 people from government agencies and related associations, institutes and companies. By the end of June, China had granted nearly 4,400 GI trademarks, including 171 from overseas applicants.

High value patent projects awarded

The 2018 awards for the cultivation of high value patents were granted to eight out of 17 projects presented in the second round of competition from Tuesday to Wednesday in Beijing. The winning projects covered various industries including new materials, intelligent manufacturing and the new generation of information technology. Organized by the intellectual property office of Haidian district and the Intellectual Property Publishing House Co Ltd, the contest, which started in April, is set to conclude in August.

Judicial system to open nationwide

An intellectual property judicial system covering the whole country will be established by the end of 2020, according to a national judicial conference held in Qingdao recently. Chinese courts nationwide have reformed and improved the IP judiciary protection system over the past five years. Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou set up specialized IP courts in late 2014 while another 16 cities, including Nanjing and Wuhan, have set up IP divisions in their courts that had cross-regional jurisdiction over technical cases since the beginning of 2017.

Chongqing

Center advances design applications

The China Chongqing Automobile and Motorcycle Intellectual Property Rights Fast Aid Center opened on July 12. The center is responsible for the speedy examination and rights recognition of vehicle industrial design filings, pre-pleading conciliation of patent infringements and assistance in IP protection. The center can help to reduce the period of dealing with an industrial design filing to less than one month from about six to eight months previously, a representative of the center said.

Guizhou

White paper shows protection results

The province recently released its 2017 intellectual property protection and development white paper, showing its administrative agencies for law enforcement concluded 6,824 cases last year. Police in Guizhou investigated nearly 400 IP infringement cases and settled more than 250 while local courts heard 374 IP cases and concluded 344. The province saw 34,607 patent applications filed in 2017, a year-on-year rise of 36.71 percent, and a further 48 geographical indication protection products registered.
